Two earners, one rent day, and the envelope that keeps getting opened

A household can have a steady salary and still run out of grocery money. In the Bang Nak room this usually shows up as two adults with different pay days and one rent date that belongs to neither of them cleanly. One person is paid on the first. The other is paid when a stall, a boat, or a shift settles. Rent leaves on the fifth. The gap is short on a calendar and long in the kitchen.

The envelope without a name

Named envelopes survive. The rent envelope, once it has the word rent on the outside and a date under it, tends to stay closed. The trouble is the envelope that holds 'whatever is left'. It pays for ice, a cousin's bus fare, a school form, and then it is empty on the morning the market needs cash. Nobody stole it. It had no job, so every job used it.

A useful first step is boring. Write the rent amount and the day it leaves. Agree which earner fills that envelope, and on which of their pay days. If the salary arrives on the first and rent leaves on the fifth, the salary fills rent before anything else is discussed. The second earner's money then has a different job: food for the week, or the instalment that falls later.

Both people in the room

A sheet written by one person and handed to the other usually stays in a drawer. The adult who did not help choose the amounts hears the plan as a criticism. In sittings that hold, both earners say the dates out loud. They can disagree about the grocery figure. They should. A figure one person cannot live with will be broken by Thursday.

The shared grocery amount is a weekly number, not a monthly one. A monthly grocery figure hides the week when the salary has already covered rent and the second income has not arrived. A weekly figure makes that thin stretch visible while there is still time to leave rice and oil inside it.

What the sheet is allowed to decide

The sheet does not need to police every baht of personal spending. It does need to say which money is already spoken for before either person treats cash in hand as free. Households that do this one thing — rent filled on a named day, by a named person — stop having the same argument in the doorway. The rest of the month can stay a little untidy.
